Big Data, Big Challenges

What are the emerging roles for librarians and information professionals and the services and resources needed to support the analysis, curation and reuse of large data sets? The data deluge–data intensive science, social science and information networks–is here. Are you ready? Join our panel of corporate and academic librarians and the researchers they work with to learn about these new roles and services.

Speakers: Amy Affelt, Compass Lexecon; David Minor, UC San Diego; Richard Moore, San Diego Supercomputer Center; Britt Mueller, Qualcomm

Moderator: Helen Josephine, Engineering Librarian, Stanford University Libraries12:00 pm – 1:30 pm

Where Did All the Books Go, Exploring e-Library Models at the Engineering and Physcial Sciences Libraries at Cornell University

Within two years, both the Physical Sciences Library and Engineering Library at Cornell University closed their stacks and transitioned into eLibraries. These changes were largely in response to a declining budget and recognition that our users largely coexist in the online environment when doing research. This new business model presents challenges to the PS and Engineering librarians, including communicating where the print resources have gone, how to access online material and get help from librarians. The new eLibrary models encourage us to reinvent ways of doing outreach and develop virtual tools and services to further assist our science communities.

Speakers: Jeremy Cusker, Cornell University; Dianne Dietrich, Cornell University;  Jill Wilson, Cornell University

4:00 pm – 5:30 pm

Biomaterials and Their Use in Tissue Engineering

Join us for a glimpse behind the scenes into the development of biomaterials. Our speaker Dr. Karen Christman is an award-winning polymer chemist and bioengineer who develops novel biomaterials for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine applications. Projects are highly interdisciplinary and include the development of materials for in vitro differentiation of stem cells to injectable biomaterials for tissue repair and regeneration. Her talk will focus on the development and testing of injectable biomaterials for treating cardiovascular disease or for treating myocardial infarction.

Speaker: Dr. Karen Christman, University of California, San Diego

5:30 pm – 7:30 pm

All Sciences Poster Session & Reception

This event highlights multiple themes representing connections, collaboration, and strategy in the sciences and beyond, with support from multiple divisions. Join your colleagues for food, drink, and networking, and learn new ideas to take back to your library.
