Chemistry for the Non-Chemist Librarian
CE Half day course
Instructors: Susan Cardinal, Judith Currano
Ticketed event – $199 members/ $99 students-retired/ $299 non-members
Improve your knowledge and confidence in the structure and language of chemistry through this hands-on course. Learn basic principles of the five major divisions of chemistry, chemical terminology and drawing, and other intellectual tools that chemists need to do their work. This course has four main sections: 1) introduction to chemistry as a science, 2) strategies for effective communication with chemists, 3) basic chemical concepts and research questions, and 4) ways in which chemists’ research needs dictate their information needs.
1:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Chemical Information Sources
CE Half day course
Instructors: Judith Currano, Dawn French
Ticketed event – $199 members/ $99 students-retired/ $299 non-members
This course introduces the types of questions that chemical researchers ask, and the sources that can be used to answer them. Learn an overview of the structure of the chemical literature, types of reference sources in the chemical sciences, unique access points for chemical information, and strategies for an effective search. Informal lectures, interspersed with hands-on reference questions, will compare and describe the major chemical information resources.
5:00 pm – 7:00 pm
DCHE Board Meeting
The DCHE Board Meeting will have an agenda related to items of importance to DCHE Board members, including 2013 and 2014 SLA Annual Conference program planning. The Board Meeting is open to all members.
7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
DCHE Newcomers Hosted / DCHE No-Host Dinner
DCHE newcomers will join DCHE members for a joint dinner. The dinner affords ample opportunities for newcomers to meet and greet current members happy to share experiences and advice. Newcomers meals will be hosted. Current members will pay for their own meals.

Science and Technology on the Go: An Update
This program will explore the developments and usefulness of mobile apps in science and technology information resources. Vendors and users will share their innovations, experiences, and future directions. Updates and expands on the mobile apps session at the 2012 Annual Conference and will include two vendors discussing chemistry apps .
Speakers: Neil Allison, Professor, University of Arkansas; Andrew Carlos, California State University, East Bay, STEM/Web Librarian; other speakers to include 3-4 vendors with relevant mobile apps
Moderator: Susan Makar, Research Librarian, National Institute of Standards and Technology

Next Generation Science Librarians: Helping Institutions and Researchers Increase Their Impact
It’s not just reference and cataloging anymore. Librarians/analysts will share practical information about how they serve customers in this new non-traditional role.
Speakers: Elizabeth Brown, Scholarly Communications and Library Grants Officer and Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Material Science Librarian, Binghamton University Libraries, Binghamton University, State University of New York; Susan Makar, Librarian and Liaison to the Material Measurement Laboratory, National Institute of Standards and Technology; Jason Priem, Co-founder, ImpactStory
Moderator: Luti Salisbury, University Professor/Librarian, University of Arkansas Libraries
12:00 pm – 1:30 pm.
Big Data, Big Challenges
What are the emerging roles for librarians and information professionals and the services and resources needed to support the analysis, curation and reuse of large data sets? The data deluge–data intensive science, social science and information networks–is here. Are you ready? Join our panel of corporate and academic librarians and the researchers they work with to learn about these new roles and services.
Speakers: Amy Affelt, Compass Lexecon; David Minor, UC San Diego; Richard Moore, San Diego Supercomputer Center; Britt Mueller, Qualcomm
Moderator: Helen Josephine, Engineering Librarian, Stanford University Libraries12:00 pm – 1:30 pm
Where Did All the Books Go, Exploring e-Library Models at the Engineering and Physcial Sciences Libraries at Cornell University
Within two years, both the Physical Sciences Library and Engineering Library at Cornell University closed their stacks and transitioned into eLibraries. These changes were largely in response to a declining budget and recognition that our users largely coexist in the online environment when doing research. This new business model presents challenges to the PS and Engineering librarians, including communicating where the print resources have gone, how to access online material and get help from librarians. The new eLibrary models encourage us to reinvent ways of doing outreach and develop virtual tools and services to further assist our science communities.
Speakers: Jeremy Cusker, Cornell University; Dianne Dietrich, Cornell University; Jill Wilson, Cornell University
4:00 pm – 5:30 pm
Biomaterials and Their Use in Tissue Engineering
Join us for a glimpse behind the scenes into the development of biomaterials. Our speaker Dr. Karen Christman is an award-winning polymer chemist and bioengineer who develops novel biomaterials for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine applications. Projects are highly interdisciplinary and include the development of materials for in vitro differentiation of stem cells to injectable biomaterials for tissue repair and regeneration. Her talk will focus on the development and testing of injectable biomaterials for treating cardiovascular disease or for treating myocardial infarction.
Speaker: Dr. Karen Christman, University of California, San Diego
5:30 pm – 7:30 pm
All Sciences Poster Session & Reception
This event highlights multiple themes representing connections, collaboration, and strategy in the sciences and beyond, with support from multiple divisions. Join your colleagues for food, drink, and networking, and learn new ideas to take back to your library.
